2nd Norway Blitz 2014, 02 June 2014

The Carlsen-Aronian draw at the 2014 Norway Chess Blitz (Round 4) was a quick game between the two highest-rated players in the world. Norway Chess in 2014 had a blitz prelude before the classical portion began — a now-standard format for elite invitational events.

The blitz game lasted roughly 30 moves before being agreed drawn in a balanced minor-piece endgame. Carlsen as White had chosen a solid opening; Aronian as Black had defended accurately; neither had reached a position with winning chances. The draw contributed equal half-points to both players’ blitz standings.

The 2014 Norway Chess tournament was held in Stavanger from June 2-13. The field included Carlsen, Caruana, Karjakin, Kramnik, Aronian, Anand, Topalov, Giri, Svidler, and Agdestein. Carlsen — playing in his home country — was the favourite but did not win. The tournament was won by Sergey Karjakin with a strong final-rounds performance. Carlsen finished co-second with Aronian.

Norway Chess has become one of the most respected annual events in elite chess since its founding in 2013. The 2014 edition was its second year and helped establish the format that has been used since: a strong ten-player round-robin with blitz qualifier matches, held at the Stavanger Concert Hall. By 2024 Carlsen had won the event multiple times and the format had become one of the most-watched on the elite calendar.
