7th Norway Chess 2019, 14 June 2019

Round 9.1 of the 2019 7th Norway Chess (Stavanger) ended drawn between Caruana and Carlsen. The 2019 Norway Chess was the inaugural event using the “armageddon tiebreak” format — drawn classical games were followed by faster armageddon playoff games to ensure decisive results.

The classical game itself was a positional Catalan, Caruana as White playing a solid system. Carlsen’s defence was accurate and the draw was accepted in 38 moves. The armageddon followup gave additional points (and tiebreak weight) to whichever player won the playoff — Caruana on this occasion.

The 2019 Norway Chess Tournament was won by Carlsen with a strong performance in both classical games and armageddon tiebreaks. The classical-portion score across the field was relatively even, with many drawn games; the armageddons provided the differential that established Carlsen’s overall victory.

The armageddon format remained controversial but Norway Chess has retained it. By 2024 it had become a recognisable feature of the Norway Chess brand, attracting both spectator interest and theoretical debate. The format prizes time-pressure performance — a Carlsen strength — over pure classical depth.
