Round 2 of the 2001 Botvinnik Memorial classical match (December 2) was a draw between Kasparov and Kramnik. The classical opening game of the Memorial set the tone for the careful theoretical play that would characterise the entire event.
The draw was a Spanish Opening, the classical theoretical battleground. Kasparov as White built small structural pressure; Kramnik’s defence was accurate; the endgame was balanced. The draw was accepted in 40 moves.
The classical opening games of the 2001 Botvinnik Memorial were the most theoretically-rich of the event. Both players had spent the period since the 2000 World Championship match refining their preparation; both knew that the Memorial offered an opportunity to test specific lines against the most prepared opponent available. The resulting games featured several novelties that appeared in subsequent World Championship preparation.
The Botvinnik Memorial 2001 was held in Moscow as a tribute event to Mikhail Botvinnik’s 90th birthday. Botvinnik had died in 1995, six years before the Memorial. The event’s framing — celebrating the founder of the Soviet chess school — made it culturally significant beyond the pure chess content.
