ACC African Chess Confederation
The continental governing body of African chess — coordinates events across 53 member federations and runs the African Chess Championship cycle.
The African Chess Confederation was founded in 1972 as the FIDE continental body for Africa. It currently has 53 member federations, covering essentially every African nation that maintains an organised chess scene at federation level. Headquarters historically in Cairo, with rotating administrative arrangements depending on which national federation the current president comes from.
The Events
The ACC’s flagship events are the annual African Individual Chess Championship (qualifies the top finishers to the FIDE World Cup), the African Team Championship, and the African Youth and Schools Championships. Continental rankings are dominated by South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, and Madagascar; ACC is actively involved in the FIDE Chess for All / Education initiatives that have rapidly expanded chess infrastructure in West Africa over the past decade.
