Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa — universally known as Pragg — is one of three young Indian grandmasters who together reshaped the upper end of the world rating list in the mid-2020s. He earned the international master title at ten, the grandmaster title at twelve years and ten months (then the second-youngest ever), and entered the world top 20 before he could vote.

His breakthrough at adult elite level came in 2023, when he reached the final of the Chess World Cup in Baku, eliminating Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Magnus Carlsen along the way — and losing to Carlsen in the final after drawing both classical games. The result qualified him for the 2024 Candidates Tournament, where he finished in the middle of the field but established himself as a permanent fixture of the world championship cycle.

He plays a universal style — comfortable in sharp tactical positions and patient grinding endgames in roughly equal measure. His coach is RB Ramesh of the Chess Gurukul academy, and his sister Vaishali is also a grandmaster, the first pair of siblings to both qualify for a Candidates Tournament. Indian chess in the 2020s has had three players in serious world-title contention — Pragg, Gukesh, Arjun — and Pragg is the one whose calm temperament has marked him for the long haul.
